On Sunday, May 4, 2014, two International Center for Spinal Cord Injury patients rolled to victory by competing in the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon. Paul Libby and James Cook were awarded race scholarships from funds raised through Kennedy Krieger Institute's participation as a charity team in the Baltimore Running Festival.
James, who had only competed in one prior marathon, placed 3rd in the handcycle division. James is grateful for the opportunity, saying, "For a while after my injury, I didn't compete in any sports, and I always felt like I was missing something. Competing in marathons has helped me fill that void."
Paul says he feels "blessed and lucky" to be able to benefit from the racing scholarship and to participate in an experience that would have been nearly impossible without it. Tanya, Paul's wife, explains that through the money raised by Team Kennedy Krieger, "Activities that once seemed impossible have now been made possible." This fall, both Paul and Tanya will be racing together as part of Team Kennedy Krieger at the Baltimore Running Festival.
