December 17 | 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
More than 50 women came together in mid-December at the home of Laura Wille, membership chair of the Women’s Initiative Network (WIN) for Kennedy Krieger Institute, for WIN’s first “Girls’ Night Out.” It was great opportunity to celebrate the holidays and learn more about the Institute and WIN. As a result of this tremendous “friend-raiser,” WIN welcomed 16 new members to join the group in raising funds and awareness for the patients, students and families of Kennedy Krieger.
The money donated by Girls’ Night Out attendees will be used to purchase gift cards to gas stations and grocery stores for Kennedy Krieger’s inpatient families. It can be financially difficult for inpatient caregivers to drive back and forth to see their child in the hospital while taking care of other children at home and maintaining a job. By providing gift cards to gas stations, we can relieve some of the financial stress and added cost that is typically not accounted for during a hospital stay.
A majority of our families are from out of town and, as you can imagine, it can get very expensive purchasing three meals a day. The Social Work Department team provides grocery store gift cards to help offset the cost of meals. There are a refrigerator and microwave in the inpatient hospital’s parent lounge, so parents may purchase groceries and prepare their own meals.
