Shopping for Something Good

August 29 | 6:00 pm to September 02 | 9:00 pm

Recently Karen Singer stated “What fun it was to coordinate and host a charity bazaar (“Shopping for Something Good”) in my home at the end of the summer.   While shopping in a charity consignment store in Pittsburgh last April, I thought how much fun it would be organization a sale, with all of the proceeds benefitting organizations that are near and dear to my heart and serve a variety of constituents.  I quickly decided that Kennedy Krieger Institute would be one of the three beneficiaries (my father, Howard Miller, currently serves as Board Chair), with Jewish Volunteer Connection (where I currently serve as Board Chair) and Girl Scouts of Central Maryland (where I serve on the Board) being the other two beneficiaries”.

She received donations from 65 people, had 36 volunteers and over 100 shoppers participate in the event.  Over the five-day sale period, over $8,000 was raised, which was split equally between the three organizations.  The remaining merchandise was donated to Art with A Heart, Center for Urban Families, and CHANA.   Everyone experienced a “win”--the contributors found some room in their closets; the volunteers’ help and enthusiasm was invaluable and the shoppers refreshed their looks---everything was redeployed for a great purpose!  And, the three organizations can have a few more resources to continue each of their amazing and awesome missions.

Thank you so much Karen for your commitment to Kennedy Krieger Institute. If you would like to be added to that list to learn of upcoming events, please email her at ksinger.somethinggood@gmail.com.
