Quality and Safety are Essential Parts of Patient Care

Performance Committee Group ShotThe Performance Improvement (PI) Steering Committee helps employees strive to achieve patient care that is “STEEP”—an acronym for “Safe; Timely; Effective and efficient; Equitable; and Patient-centered.”

Healthcare employees at the Institute are supportive, compassionate and committed. Patient satisfaction matters to them. Cultural diversity is valued and respected. Employees listen to patients and their families and strive for continuous improvement in order to achieve the best possible patient outcomes.

To encourage this kind of focus on quality and safety, the PI Steering Committee celebrates Kennedy Krieger’s “Quality Champions” twice per year. For each round, the committee calls for nominations (15 employees were nominated in the last round), and then two employees who have achieved a commitment to excellence in their daily roles are chosen as Quality Champions and are recognized by the entire Institute.

During the 2016 nomination period, interactive tables were set up at locations throughout the Institute so that staff members could learn more about Kennedy Krieger's culture of quality and safety. Staff members received a brochure outlining the components of a culture of excellence. A “Quality Crossword Puzzle” helped get ideas rolling, and staff members shared ideas for performance improvement. These ideas were submitted to the PI Steering Committee for review.

The next round of nominations for Quality Champions will be in late February 2017 for the Quality Champion luncheon celebration in April.
